Mobile Design System

2019

Verizon Connect

At Verizon Connect we had a lot of mobile apps, created by different teams using different technology and frameworks over a long period of time. And it showed. Apps looked and behaved differently. We had a dozen different sign-in screens, at least four different kinds of map, and we lost count of button styles, fonts, colours, it was all a bit chaotic. And because of this, apps were getting harder to design and develop and our users were not getting the best experience.

We decided that we should create a mobile design system to capture and share the knowledge and experience within our teams and enable designers and developers to design and build with tested and validated components. We wanted to develop a set of shared principles and guidelines to make it much easier to create consistent experiences across products and platforms, faster, and at scale.

So we created a deck to help share our vision, and to be a north star for our mobile design efforts. And since every project needs a great code name, we chose Delorean. Because, like building a time machine into a car, if you’re going to build a mobile design system, why not do it with some style?
